Regret
A man explains to his Ex that it was fate that tore them apart, rather than his adultary
Vocals: Tamlan Dipper
Written after a boozy afternoon birthday party with Steve, Pippa and her friends, one of whom was going though a break-up. This isn't really all that much like the actual story (one or two details remain). And it's from the cheating man's point of view, for some reason. The exact set-up here is that the couple who are getting divorced are having a kind-of 'goodbye evening' where they are drinking in a wine bar, then go and have dinner later. Speaking about this and that, but the real talk is about where it all went wrong.
And it went wrong when the singer committed adultery with a mutual friend.
Not that this particular 'gentleman' is willing to admit that it was his fault. You know, it was fate! The passage of time pulled us apart! The distance was deafening! I needed to be free and follow my heart! Etc, etc, blah, blah. And a bunch of other bulls**t that passes the lips of someone who is genuinely living in the belief that their actions were 100% OK and reasonable.
Thank go to DJN/RN for useful discussions on the mix (which was supprisingly difficult to get anywhere near right).
Lyrics
Verse
Sitting in a cafe-bar a
Coffee pot, some talking shop is
bustling with life passing
Bustling with thoughts.
Talking of a plane journey
visa check and baggage collect,
Thinking of the real words that
give us how we're here.
Chorus
In the end, the dice were cast
when you toured East, and Jenna passed
Her form through, our lives falling sand.
But take the time, before mum died,
When we were ours, and you my bride,
Were bounded to my heart's loving hand.
Verse
Walking on, some restaurant
Table two and something new you,
want to say it's my fault, you
Want to claim is me...
Waiting on a break in the
quiet cold, I won't be told that
Fault is mine, I needed to,
Break away, be free.
Chorus
In the end, the dice were cast
when you toured East, and Jenna passed
Her form through, our lives falling sand.
But take the time, before mum died,
When we were ours, and you my bride,
Were bounded to my heart's loving hand.
Bridge (Instrumental)
Verse
Sitting in a cafe-bar some
bottle wine, and still some time to
Pass away the past life or
lay to rest regret.
Standing up to walk on you
Never break - for heavens sake just
know I think you right to go
right you don't forget...
End Chorus
In the end, the dice were cast
when you toured East, and Jenna passed
Her form through, our lives falling sand
But take the time, before mum died,
When we were ours, and you my bride,
Were bounded to my heart's loving hand.
Yeah take the time before mum died
and you broke down in broken pride
needing to throw in your say...
so in the end I throw the dice
I landed here please don't think twice -
leave regret standing in the doorway.
